From Super Nature To Salt-N-Pepa

Salt-N-Pepa, originally named Super Nature, was formed in Queens, New York, in 1985 by Salt, aka Cheryl James, and Pepa, aka Sandra Denton. While studying nursing at Queensborough Community College, the iconic duo met and quickly discovered a shared love of hip-hop music. At the time, hip-hop was still a relatively new genre, and few female artists were in the scene. Salt, Pepa, and Spinderella saw an opportunity to make a name for themselves and began performing together at local clubs and parties.

The duo was working at Sears merchandising, where they met Hurby Azor, aka Luv Bug, as per Black Past. Azor asked the duo to record a song for his class project, which led to the release of their first single, The Show Stopper, in 1985, along with DJ Latoya Hanson, who joined as the group's third member, thus forming a trio. The song was an instant hit on the underground hip-hop scene and was later released by an independent label, Pop Art Records. The song's popularity landed Salt and Pepa a recording contract with Next Plateau Records. After the tremendous success of The Show Stopper, Hurby Azor, aka Luv Bug, changed the group's name from Super Nature to Salt-N-Pepa.

DJ Spinderella's Addition To The Band

In 1986, Salt-N-Pepa signed a deal with Next Plateau Records and released their debut album, Hot, Cool & Vicious. The album included the single hit Push It, which became a massive success, reaching number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart as mentioned in Billboard. In 1987 DJ Latoya parted ways with the group and was replaced by DJ Spinderella, thus giving birth to the iconic trio.
