You see them in the tabloids, on your television screens, in fashion magazines and on billboards. But, how much do you really know about the supermodel siblings, Gigi and Bella Hadid? We first got to know the girls through their mother’s role on The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills. They were the beautiful, wealthy teens who were given everything in life thanks to their rich and famous family. Today, with a bit of hard work they’ve arguably become the most famous ones in their family.
First, Jelena AKA Gigi Hadid stepped onto the scene. In 2013 she signed with IMG Models. Since, she’s walked the runways of New York Fashion Week, landed the cover of countless magazines, starred in a number of huge fashion campaigns and been named Daily Front Row’s Model of the Year in 2015.
Isabella AKA Bella Hadid was next to make her mark on the fashion world. She was signed to IMG Models in 2014. She’s walked the runways of New York Fashion Week for designers like Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs and Diane von Fürstenberg. She’s also walked at London, Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks for Topshop, Balmain, and Chanel. In 2016, she was named Daily Front Row’s Model of the Year.
The sisters are elite members of the hot young Hollywood crew and the most high-demand models in the game right now. Beyond that, they have pretty interesting qualities and personal lives. Keep reading to discover 15 things you never knew about the Hadid sisters.
15. The Have Family Ties To Their Jenner Besties
Two of the hottest sets of siblings in Hollywood, the Hadids and the Jenners. The pairs of sisters have a lot in common, they’re gorgeous, famous as ever and have more money than they know what to do with. Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, or #KenGi have been modelling together for years, with their little sisters Bella and Kylie in tow, they create the fiercest brat pack ever.
Being young, rich and famous isn't the only thing that the girls have in common. Check out this complicated family history; the Hadids' step-dad was once married to the Jenners' father’s ex-wife. Confused? Me too. But, at the end of the day the Hadids and Jenners are sort of like sisters (once removed?) in their complex family tree.
14. Gigi Is A Music Video Muse
If there are two things Gigi is good at, it’s looking hot on camera and dating chart-topping musicians. Put two and two together, and you have Gigi starring in all of her boyfriend’s music videos. She’s dated musicians Cody Simpson, Joe Jonas and currently, Zayn Malik.
Altogether, Gigi has appeared in eight music videos, always playing the hot love interest, of course. She’s starred in two of Simpson’s videos and even directed the “Cake by the Ocean” video for Joe Jonas’ band, DNCE. In 2016, she starred in the video for “Pillowtalk” with Malik. Boy, those steamy videos would be awkward to stumble across on the web after breaking up. Other artists Gigi has worked with are Miguel, Clavin Harris, Halsey and most obviously, she appeared in Taylor Swift’s music video for “Bad Blood”.
13. Bella Has Lyme Disease
The Hadids' mother Yolanda has been very public about her battle with Lyme Disease. But, what some don’t know is that Bella and her younger brother Anwar were also diagnosed with the illness back in 2012. The disease is caused by tick bites and causes inflammation in the body leading to flu-like symptoms. Although Lyme is not hereditary, it is common for several family members to be diagnosed simply because they share the same environment.
Sadly, last year Bella had to give up her dream on attending the Rio Olympics for equestrian events due to her illness. She was forced to sell her horse because she was too sick to ride and take care of it. Beyond that, she says the disease also takes a toll on her memory. Lyme can be treated with antibiotics. Bella took to Snapchat last year, revealing the IV treatment she does on a daily basis.
12. They Have A Very Complicated Relationship With Taylor Swift's Squad
The Hadid sisters are both members of the infamous Taylor Swift squad. Gigi and Swift first became friends in 2014, with Bella being her younger sister, of course she was admitted into the crew. Recently, there has been some drama surrounding the large female friend group causing some rifts.
This past July, we were all invited to the #KimExposedTaylorParty in which Kim Kardashian revealed audio recordings of Swift approving of Kanye West’s lewd lyrics for his song “Famous”. As Taylor became mortal enemies with Kim K., this was an awkward time for the squad being as Gigi is BFFs with Kardashian clan member, Kendall Jenner. Gigi claimed to never have chosen sides and tried to stay as far away from the drama as possible. Probably a good idea.
Bella and long time boyfriend, The Weeknd broke up back in November. And who swooped in no more than two months later? OG squad member, Selena Gomez. She and The Weeknd have been cozy ever since causing some major squad drama. Bella is reportedly pissed about the whole situation and unfollowed Gomez on social media. I don’t think we’re going to see a happy squad reunion any time soon.
11. There Is A Gigi Barbie Doll
Along with the likes of other famous models like Ashley Graham and Heidi Klum, Gigi has been immortalized as a Barbie doll. The doll was released by Mattel earlier this year, just in time for her runway show collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger, Tommy X Gigi. She shared a photo on Instagram of her new Barbie doll rollerblading and taking selfies on the streets of Malibu with the original Barbie, both wearing their Hilfiger gear.
There have been some Barbie hits and misses when it comes to the resemblance to their muse. But, you can't deny the resemblance of Gigi to her doll is uncanny. Not many 21-year-olds can say they have a Barbie doll version of themselves. Yes, this was a creative way to promote the Tommy X Gigi runway show, but it’s unclear whether or not fans can actually own their own Gigi doll.
10. Bella's Had A DUI
We knew she was a bit more of a badass than her older sister, but we never knew she had a criminal record! In 2014, when Bella was 17 years old, she was apprehended by police in California after she allegedly drove through a stop sign and almost crashed into a Sheriff’s patrol car. She was given a breathalyzer and blew a .14, nearly twice the legal limit. However, Bella being a minor at the time was not to have any alcohol in her system at all while driving. If that's not bad enough, she was also driving with a suspended license.
Bella’s mom Yolanda revealed the teen’s punishment on The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills. Her phone and social media was taken away for 21 days and she had to pay for her own lawyer’s fees.
9. They Have An Intricate Web Of Famous Family Members
You didn’t think the Hadids just stumbled into the modelling world, did you? Of course not, they have a band of famous family members who helped them get where they are. Are you ready for this Hadid history lesson?
First off, we have immediate family. Mom Yolanda Foster is a former model herself as well as a cast member on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Dad Mohamed Hadid is a famous real estate developer. Brother Anwar Hadid is also a budding model. Their step-dad David Foster is a famous music executive.
The Hadids' half-sisters are fashion moguls. Their step-sisters on the Foster side are actresses and reality stars. They also share a step-father with reality stars, Brandon and Brody Jenner, indirectly relating them back to Kendall and Kylie. Phew, I told you it was complicated.
8. They Love Junk Food
So, watching the Hadid sisters walk down the Victoria’s Secret runway, being able to count every ab and see right through their thigh-gaps, you’d probably assume they eat like rabbits. Sadly, that’s not the case. Bella loves to document her diet on social media which consists of a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches, fries and pizza. “Right now my diet is pizza, so recently that’s all I’ve been eating. I’m not really a big ‘working out’ person, but I definitely like to do cardio when I do. I guess I run sometimes, drink green juices once a week,” she said in an interview. Can we trade metabolisms there, Bella?
Her older sis is no better. She revealed to Cosmopolitan her favourite foods: bacon, burgers, ice cream and sushi. Her motto? “Eat clean to stay healthy, eat a burger to stay sane.” Unlike Bella, Gigi does enjoy working out on a regular basis.
7. Gigi Has A Thyroid Disease
Although Gigi managed to escape the diagnoses of Lyme disease unlike the rest of her family, she does not have a clean bill of health. She revealed last year that she has an illness called Hashimoto’s disease which is an autoimmune condition causing the immune system to attack its own tissues.
Gigi claims her metabolism went downhill (not that any of us could tell) last year, which is a direct symptom of the disease. Other symptoms can include hair loss, brittle nails, swelling of the face and muscle aches. Fortunately with regular medication, symptoms can be reversed. The good news? The meds seem to be working wonders on Gigi. We saw her looking hot and healthy as ever on the Victoria’s Secret runway back in December. The bad news? She’ll have to continue hormone therapy for the rest of her life in order to keep the disease at bay.
6. They're Inked And Pierced
The Hadid girls may look pretty clean-cut, but the truth is they do have a few bad girl brands. In previous years, Gigi claimed she was iffy about ever getting tatted. Whenever she thought about getting a tattoo she’d draw it onto her skin with marker and by a month she’d be over it. This wasn’t the case for her recent friendship tattoo though. Gigi, Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevingne and Hailey Baldwin all got tiny, matching broken heart tattoos.
Bella’s got some symbolic ink herself. Following her gig at the 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, she got tiny angel wings tattooed to the back of her ankle to commemorate the experience. She’s also got a naughty set of nipple rings which we see her show off now and then in sheer tops.
5. They're Equestrians
When you grow up rich, no doubt riding majestic stallions is one of your pastimes. While their relationship with horses these days mainly consists of modelling with them, the sisters have always been in love with equestrianism. Gigi and Bella grew up around horses, their family lived on a ranch for 10 years. While Gigi’s love for riding is more of a hobby, Bella dreamed of making a career out of it.
Bella has been riding since the age of three. She’s an award-winning, nationally ranked equestrian. In 2016, she revealed her plans to train for the Rio Olympics. Unfortunately, due to illness she was forced to give up on her Olympic dreams. It was heartbreaking for her, but luckily she was still able to focus on her modelling career.
4. They've Been College Girls
Although the sisters each make a hell of a living off of modelling, they once had other professions in mind. Gigi attended The New School in New York City for criminal psychology. Her mother said Gigi was fascinated by her courses and she hoped she would continue through the program and earn a degree. Unfortunately, Gigi’s hectic schedule put her schooling on hold, possibly indefinitely as her dreams of modelling trump earning a college diploma.
Bella also went to The New School in NYC. She studied photography which she claims has been an advantage in her modelling career. Photographers she’s worked with appreciate her knowledge of cameras, lenses, lighting, and angles, making her a great subject to work with. Like her sister, Bella also ditched her college dreams for modelling. Who blames them?
3. They Have Muslim Roots
Wonder where the Hadid girls’ natural beauty comes from? Their mom is Dutch while their Father is Palestinian, making for a gorgeous heritage combo. Their Dad, Mohamed Hadid, does not consider himself a devout Muslim, but still practices the faith. The sisters keep their own faith pretty private, although they have publicly supported the Muslim religion.
The sisters may have a strategic reason for declaring themselves as practising Muslims. If they did, they would open themselves up to criticism for their choices to model in the bare flesh. Gigi is able to connect to the Muslim religion not only through her father but also through her boyfriend, Zayn Malik. While Google searches for the models’ religion tops 120,000 searches per year, the sisters continue to keep that information for their private life.
2. They're Very Anti Trump
As mentioned, the Hadid sisters have made it a point to publicly support the Muslim religion although they’ve never revealed whether or not it is their own faith. Back in January, Gigi and Bella took to the streets of NYC to protest against President Trump’s anti-Muslim ban, holding the sign pictured above.
Gigi also tweeted her support to the participants in the Women’s March that took place after Trump’s presidential inauguration. She also attempted to poke fun at First Lady, Melania Trump at the 2016 American Music Awards which was not received very well. The model mocked Mrs. Trump for reportedly plagiarizing a speech by Michelle Obama and did so with a fake Slovenian accent. Gigi was criticized for being racist and being a bully. She released a hand-written note apologizing for her actions claiming she had no ill intent. We can add the Hadids to Trump’s long list of haters.
1. Bella's A Natural Blonde
Gigi and Bella definitely look alike, but vastly different at the same time. Unlike the Kardashian-Jenner siblings who pride themselves on all looking alike, the Hadids opted to go for a bit of originality in their modelling career. Gigi is a glowing, tanned blonde bombshell while Bella’s signature look is dark hair and pale skin.
Most people don’t realize that Bella is a natural blonde. She decided to dye her hair brunette early in her modelling career to form a distinction from her older sister. “I just have a darker personality. And my sister being blonde and me being brunette, it's a good separation,” she's said. She does have fun with the idea of going back blonde one day, but for now says she’s happy with her dark locks.
