Born Sourav Chandidas Ganguly on July 8, 1972 in Behala, Calcutta, West Bengal, India, he is the youngest son of Chandidas and Nirupa Ganguly. He was raised in an affluent Brahmin family and was introduced into the world of cricket by his elder brother Snehasish. He is a left-handed batsman and a right-handed medium-pace bowler. He is naturally right-handed but became a left-handed batsman at a young age so he could use his brother’s cricket equipment. He is fondly called as the Prince of Kolkata. He is also called the Bengal tiger because of his place of birth and the way he could pounce on the ball.

Ganguly is regarded as one of India’s most successful captains in modern times. He began his career by playing in state and school teams. He is an aggressive captain and is credited with having nurtured the careers of many young players who played under him. He is currently the fifth highest run scorer in One Day Internationals (ODI) and was the third person in history to cross the 10,000 run landmark after Sachin Tendulkar and Inzamam Ul Haq. The Western Cricketers’ Almanack ranked him the sixth greatest ODI batsman of all time in 2002, next to Viv Richards, Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Dean Jones and Michael Bevan.

Sourav Ganguly was India’s most successful Test captain to date, winning 21 tests out of 49 tests he captained and leading India into the 2003 World Cup finals. However, his test place was often lost to younger players towards the later stages of his career. He announced on October 7, 2008 that the Test series against Australia starting that month would be his last. He played his last first-class match on December 21, 2008.
